Whether
loaded or empty, at the cottage or wilderness tripping,
a canoe should have excellent final stability and an even,
predictable feel when leaned. It should come up to speed
very quickly and track well, even in crosswinds. It should
be maneuverable to the point where the boat seems to anticipate
your wishes, and have effortless cruising speed and extreme
seaworthiness. It should be easily handled by novice paddlers
- including children - and technically rewarding for the
most experienced canoeist. Many canoes perform well in
some of the above categories. Trillium
Canoes do it all.
Our
designs are simple and balanced. Our hulls are symmetrical
with a constant-curve rocker, true shallow arch and soft
chine from stem to stern. (Most hulls are arched in the
centre but "V" shaped at bow and stern.) Trilliums therefore
displace and replace water at a constant rate along the
length of the hull, hence our speed and efficiency. Continuing
the shallow arch through to the stems, combined with the
smooth rocker, gives the Trillium its pleasing responsiveness
as well. The flared hull runs dry in big waves and has
massive final stability when heeled over.
The
Trillium line was designed for paddlers. The elegant modern
lines cleverly incorporate easy tracking, paddling efficiency
and good acceleration with a comfortable and responsive
feel. With a soft chine and flared sides, they have excellent
final stability and allow the canoe to be tilted with
confidence and predictability. They are designed with
the canoe tripper in mind with lots of carrying capacity.
In rough conditions they are dry and retain their easy
handling characteristics. Choose a Trillium for a versatile
canoe that inspires confidence and is technically rewarding
for the experienced canoeist.

The
Trillium 15 offers a light responsive canoe for tandem
day trips or solo paddling that is surprisingly stable
and seaworthy for two people and gear. With a light load,
the shallow arch, soft chine and slight rocker presents
an efficient and responsive waterline footprint. When
the load is increased, a carrying capacity and seaworthiness
that is remarkable in a 15 foot canoe is realized. The
soft chine and flared sides give excellent secondary stability
for rough conditions or the solo paddler heeling the canoe.

The
Trillium 17 is an ideal canoe for tandem day tripping
with speed and efficiency, but this canoe excels when
loaded. It's large carrying capacity does not detract
from its' maneuverability or performance. That carrying
capacity and its' secondary stability make it an attractive
choice for family camping. Its' dryness and performance
in the roughest of conditions along with its flatwater
efficiency are ideal for the wilderness tripper.

Standard
Trim

Exclusive
Long-Travel Sliding Bow Seat - This
system is exclusive to Trillium canoes. The standard
slider (which has been around for a hundred years
or more) will allow forward adjustment from the standard
fixed position for smaller paddlers, and not only
helps to trim the canoe, but puts the smaller paddler
in a position where he or she can reach the water
more comfortably & paddle more effectively. The
long-travel slider also allows for a heavier bow paddler
to come back further than the standard position &
maintain trim. Running without gear, with the heavier
paddler in the bow, is something that you cannot do
in any other canoe. The long-travel slider also serves
as a solo seat. When slid all the way back, this positions
the solo paddler comfortably near the centre of the
hull facing the stern. Here are a few examples:
- A
couple with significant weight/size difference
- will allow the heavier one to paddle bow or
the smaller one to be comfortable & effective.
- Allows
children to paddle comfortably & efficiently
with an adult or another child.
- At
a cottage where a variety of paddlers are to be
found, or for those 'single' folks who have different
sized friends
- Allows
solo tripping or day-paddling in comfort
- Allows
dogs to ride in the bow (which most prefer - masthead,
leader of the pack, etc.) without disturbing trim
or paddler. Many find this position for dogs also
keeps them in a safer position - they can't rock
the boat from side to side. With a large dog the
bow paddler can slide back to keep the boat from
being bow heavy.
Instant
trim adjustments can be made when the conditions
change abruptly (like coming out from behind the
lee of an island into a strong wind quartering on
the bow). A minor adjustment of even an inch will
cause the bow to bite a bit more deeply, resisting
the quartering wind on the bow. When coming into
rapids, sliding further back will allow the bow
to rise over standing waves etc.
Special
note on the Long Travel Slider - Many customers report that resting the hands
on the rear cross member when portaging is more
comfortable than holding the gunwales & keeps
water from running down your arms when it rains.
The yoke is balanced with the slider all the way
back.
